I have been coming to this restaurant since i was born. Cathy and her family treated us like family. The food jas always been amazing. Unfortunately as time goes on and ownership is transferred to other family members. The food is still outstanding but not as good as it used to be. The service is what is really suffering now. We still eat here on occasion but not like we used to.

Convenient to the office and a place to re-visit unpretentious Chinese food of previous decades. Lunch specials are in the $7-9 range and provide a starter, soup, main and tea. Fast, efficient and middle of the road satisfying.

Came here for the first time tonight and had a great experience. Ordered sesame chicken and vegetable fried rice for entrees; crab Rangoon and hot/sour soup to start. Rangoons were crispy and airy, not thick so the filling was the star rather than the dough. Nice, but nothing special - no crab to be found but they were good. Soup was good, nice flavor. The sesame chicken was tasty and the pieces were small with plenty of sweet, gingery sauce. Easily split between two people; we even had leftovers. The best dish by far was the veggie fried rice. It is prepared fresh with large chunks of egg, soy sauce, and veggies - lots of veggies - snow peas, bean sprouts, carrots, mushroom, peas, and broccoli. If you've been to a Hibachi grill and had fried rice made to order, then you'll be familiar with this dish. I have never seen fried rice executed this well at a Chinese restaurant before. I will be back.

Dragon Inn offers a good experience in a somewhat quintessential Chinese restaurant environment. Though they advertise authentic Szechwan and Peking-style Chinese, I find them to be more American-style than anything...they have Chop Suey on the menu. As for the environment, it is in a great building - there is a lot of charm in the old downtown Overland Park area. However, I would recommend that you avoid sitting near the kitchen - it's not that the kitchen is dirty or unappealing, but it just doesn't make for the optimal dining experience. I had the Spicy Beef and Scallops and my wife had the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce; we also ordered some steamed beef dumplings for an appetizer. I thought the dumplings were tasty enough - but the duck sauce that came with them was fantastic. The Shrimp with Lobster Sauce was cooked well - it was eggy and delicious. The Spicy Beef with Scallops was not spicy enough for my liking, and the Scallops were a bit too soft. As for the service, the waitress was attentive if a bit unfriendly...perhaps there was a bit of a language barrier. The restaurant was not even half-full at 6:30 PM on a Saturday night - so the staff was not rushed in any way. However, it appears that they get a lot of takeout orders. There is definitely some room for improvement, but overall I would go back. I would give it a B.

Best Chinese I've had in a long time! Everything was great from the soup to the fried rice. Only problem is the pricing on their website is behind what they actually charge. Website says 6.95 and it actually costs 7.25. Not a huge difference but annoying regardless.

I have been eating at the Dragon Inn since I was a kid and to this day I have never had a bad experience. Crab rangoon is by far the best I have ever had at any Chinese establishment. Any of the schezwan dishes are great. Moo soo chicken is also very good. The workers actually know myself and my family, and they are incredibly nice. Not the most attentive at times, but they don't all speak english that well. It's a true chinese restaurant. People who have left negative comments, sorry your experience wasn't as good as all of mine! Overall, great place to get chinese food!

Solid Chinese place. We used to go to their 83rd St location for takeout at least twice a month growing up, and now we add five minutes to our drive to go to their OP location. The owners and staff are really nice, and the food is consistently good. We love the egg rolls, cashew chicken, and beef and broccoli. The fried rice is also tasty, and my dad's girlfriend is rather partial to the spicy garlic chicken. This location looks a lot busier that the 83rd St location was. When we picked up takeout on a Friday at 6:30 before a Royals playoff game, the place was almost full.

I've lived in 3 major cities and this is definitely the best chinese you could ever want. amazing hot and sour soup, crab rangoon and general tso's aka the holy trinity of chinese food. very friendly staff as well.

Dragon Inn almost sounds like a hotel but it's a restaurant. There was street parking and maybe I was lucky to find a spot right in front. It was small inside and wasn't busy. The back area was supposedly their private room, but it didn't seem like it to me. There were 11 others at our table and we were going to all pick a dish from the menu then do a family-style thing; however, we decided to split into two separate tables so it would be easier to share food. We ordered a couple of appetizers which were the Fried Meat Dumplings ($5.95) and the King Crab Rangoon ($5.95). I can't remember what we all ordered on our side of the table but I know I wanted to try the Sha Cha Beef ($9.95). The sad thing (kind of) was I had no idea which one was the Sha Cha Beef since I was taking pictures of food and didn't hear what the waitress said on the other end of the table. I just know that they all looked similar to each other in the brown sauce. The Fried Meat Dumplings were okay and nothing special. The King Crab Rangoons were pretty good though. The rest of the food came out and the other half of our table ordered duck for everybody to share. They had those pancake wrap things to wrap the duck but we were 4 short. I didn't know this until the bill came but they will charge you for the extra pancake wraps! They were 50 cents each so just a FYI if you were going to do that. The food on my side of the table all tasted similar to each other and I didn't feel like anything stood out. It was all okay to me. Our waitress came by from time to time to check on us and to fill up our water. Even though we were in the back/side of the restaurant, it didn't feel like we were totally neglected which was good. I thought the food here was okay and you can't really go wrong with anything on the menu from what I saw. The prices were reasonable in my opinion.

I used to go to Dragon Inn often in years past because the food was consistently good. I've been out of state for several years and when I came back for a visit was pleased to find it was still open. My mistake. The food was no longer good. Not only did it look unappetizing but also tasted bad enough that I couldn't finish what was on my plate and threw away the leftovers. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 was because the service was as fast and friendly as ever. I hope I just caught them on a bad night but I'm not planning to go again to find out.

My wife and I had such high hopes after recently moving to overland park that this place would be a fun outing every once and a while. Maybe it was just an off night when we went but once we walked in the door I think we knew we were in for a rough experience. The place was completely empty and it was around 6 PM. We gave it a go anyway which turned out to be a fairly large mistake. I will give them credit for the egg rolls but not our entree. We ordered the sesame chicken which I have successfully eaten at many other chinese places around the country. This chicken first off did not taste like chicken which scares me, it was super chewy and had a pretty rough gamey aftertaste. My wife and I decided it was inedible and paid our bill and left. The server seemed disinterested and a bit awkward so all and all it was a pretty terrible experience for us. Just the thought makes my stomach turn a little.....

This restaurant in Downtown Overland Park serves stereotypical Chinese American food, that I genuinely enjoyed. Since returning from Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, where I dined at some of the most famous (and expensive restaurants) in China, it has been hard for me to enjoy Chinese American restaurants. But of course the very best chefs of any style are always capable of doing much better than the average, so perhaps the comparison with the best in China is not appropriate. The fact that this restaurant doesn't meet the standards of the best in China is immediately evident from the web site, which advertises "Peking & Szechuan Cuisine." If they wanted to appear to mirror the best of current authentic Chinese food, they would advertise Beijing & Sichuan Cuisine, which would be closer to the Mandarin Chinese pronunciations. But relative to Americanized Chinese food, the Dragon Inn is very enjoyable indeed, and we definitely will return. The Szechuan (sorry, Sichuan) fish was very good, although miles apart from the best in China; and the eggplant in garlic sauce was a good pairing with the fish. The restaurant is on 80th St, about a block west of Santa Fe. There is plenty of diagonal parking on 80th just to the west of the restaurant.

First time here. They brought our food right away. Their seafood soup was really good (different from what I'm use to trying, but really good) and their orange chicken house specialty was a delicious and a good portion. (2-3 people could share it) I just wished our server could have at least smiled every once in a while when taking our orders and answering our questions. She was even dull when giving us our checks.

If you love this restaurant, you must have grown up eating there. I am not from KC so I don't have any heritage with this vintage generic Chinese food. I love Szechwan(american style) food and was excited that the menu said that was their speciality. After ordering the Szechwan beef extra spicy, I was totally unimpressed. The food was salty, bland, and tasted like all the vegetables/meat came from a can. I also ordered a shrimp spring roll and hot and sour soup. It tasted as expected but was nothing special. The atmosphere was generic 1990s chinese restaurant which should have been the first indication that the food taste fresh. Service was respectable and I didn't have any communication issues like other reviewers. Overall, I know this is a style of Chinese food that people like -- rustic American Chinese food covered in think bland sauces with cheap cuts of meat. The place was packed for lunch, but I will never visit again.

I absolutely love this place. I moved to California from Overland Park a couple of years ago and this restaurant tops the list of places i MUST visit when I'm in the area. I adore their lo mein and their chicken fried rice is fantastic. I have yet to eat bad food here and I was a weekly (sometimes everyday!) customer for years!!

The Dragon Inn has a special section in my heart. This was one the first Chinese food dining experiences of my early childhood. My mother and I would make it a special occasion. We'd get all dressed up (although this is a casual dining restaurant) and go out to eat. As a child, I remember how special it was for me to walk up with my mom to the big sign lit up and flashing. Then we'd be seated and drink hot tea out of dainty cups and it was fabulous. I still love coming here, especially with my mom. Recently, we came on a busy evening and I remember everything the same as when I was a child. The owner looks exactly the same as she did 15 years ago, and is still the picture of class. I love her. We ordered the Jasmine tea, hot and sour soup, and moo shu pork. I can't say I've ever tried anything else. I get that exact thing every time I go. I find the atmosphere, the food, and the service to be excellent and I will always find my way back here no matter where I end up.

I love Dragon Inn. If you are in the mood for Chinese, this establishment will not let you down. Its interior is interesting but cozy, the service is always fine. They always have a few daily specials, and they seem to use fresh vegetables in most of their special dishes. Like any Chinese restaurant, eating at lunch packs a bigger bang for your buck. You can't go wrong with the Hot and Sour Soup. The triple delight is delightful, and the shrimp with hot garlic sauce is excellent. You will be pleased with the quality of whatever you order here. Take it from me, I'm not just the duchess of Dragon Inn, I'm also a customer.

LOOK....I was raised on Dragon Inn from the time I was born (81).. I loved it so much, I strove to learn Chinese just so I could understand this General who names himsefl Tzo... and has a tasty sauce. What I have discovered, is that Dragon Inn makes THEE best General Tzo's chicken in the City. It is must try! And lastly do NOT forget an order of crab rangoons!!!!

First and last visit. Traditional and cozy atmosphere. Asked for egg drop soup. Got sweet and sour. Language barrier. First try of sweet & sour. Still prefer egg drop. Ordered lunch special ( chicken w/peanuts & hot peppers - not as spicy as I like - heavy sauce). Wouldn't order again. Came with pork fried rice (so-so) and crab Rangoon (very good). Food was served at very warm temp which was great. Service was also very good.

Had carryout from there twice. First was typical Chinese, but the second wasn't good. Beef was chewy and vegetables were mushy. Didn't taste good, so only ate a couple bites and threw rest out. I didn't get sick, but my stomach didn't feel good for a day from just the few bites I had. Don't think I'll go back.

Upon entering the Dragon Inn it looks like a typical Chinese restaurant that hasn't been touched for many years, but that isn't a bad thing. DW and I visited there late on a Friday night, about 9pm. We were seated right away and there were only a couple of other tables. The atmosphere was very nice, with light music playing, very peaceful and zen. We ordered egg rolls and spring rolls. DW loves egg rolls and loved the Dragon Inn's egg rolls. So much she ordered some to have the next day at home. The spring rolls were good, with a nice balance, but I don't think they had much cucumber or other veggies in them. The peanut dipping sauce was very good. I had the sesame chicken and DW ordered the sweet and sour pork. The food made it out very quickly and was tasty. The sesame chicken was different than what I've had before, but again that isn't a bad thing. It was less sweet and more savory, but it was good none the less. DW loved the sweet and sour pork. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere makes the Dragon Inn a place we will return to again.

This is good classic 1980s chinese food at its finest. This is not the run of the mill cheapo joint. Great service. The bf loves the general chicken if you like fried. The duck is great and selection its wonderful. It is a downtown OP landmark. This place has been been around for as long as I can remember and I hope it stays that way. Neighborhood favorite.

The greasiest chicken lo mein I have ever gotten. That's how I originally fell for the Dragon Inn back when I moved to Prairie Village in 1999. My roomies at the time introduced me to the place. I've always dropped in for my noodles. I finally decided to actually grab a seat and dine in once with my current roomie. We ordered a few dishes and all were great. Hot tea was wonderful. Now, this get one less star for this.... We don't like mushrooms so we was picking them out. Lady came and said those are expensive, we make it to order, you should have said no mushrooms! First off, there was nothing on the menu that said it had the mushrooms. Secondly, I'm paying for the whole dish, mushrooms and all. What I do with them is my business. It wasn't like she was going to discount my dish for saying no to the mushrooms. Me and my roomie still laugh about this. I've been back several times for take-out only. That lady has scar us for life to not dine inside. Such a shame because I really loved all the rest of it.

I was really underwhelmed with this place. It has a cool location, close to my home and in downtown OP. What I got (General Tso's chicken and fried rice) was only okay, and more money than I'm used to paying. The fried rice wasn't even fried, merely cooked in soy sauce. The General Tso's had a good flavor, but definitely not enough to keep me coming back.

Nice restaurant and wait staff was very friendly. Food was nothing to "rave" about. Pricing was moderate given food portions. There is better tasting food in the immediate area, they just don't offer the sit down atmosphere like this place.
